Techstars Design System

Problem

When Techstars hired an agency to create their new branding, everything changed from the logo to the entire website. While the agency did fantastic work, we realized some complications along the way, and the design needed to be altered.

Opportunity

We had so many pages the file became massive. Working with another designer and the agency, sharing the files became complicated and it was a good chance to suggest moving from Sketch to Figma.

Challenges

Even though the agency created a new design, there wasn’t a design system set in place. The switch took a lot of work. Thankfully, most of the components weren’t changed too much. We had never used Figma before so we learned about atomic design and built all of the components from the ground up.

Techstars website needed to appeal to investors, startups, mentors, and partnerships. The biggest challenge was creating a page for every accelerator. Around 2021, Techstars had 50 accelerators and we were in charge of gathering the content and making each page specific for their industry and city.

Solution

We created a design system that extended past the original ask. In addition to creating a mobile and desktop version for every component, we created a dark and light mode. Techstars is heavy on dark mode, but in the case that we use light, it’s better off setting all of them for both.
